Tithing Testimony

“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house.  Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.”  Malachi 3:10 (NIV)

Malachi 3:10 is the only place where God actually says to test Him.  Everywhere else we are warned to obey and not to test our God.  However, He knows we cannot out give Him, but here He wants us to try.  So let me tell you my testimony of how I learned I better tithe and even see how testing Him in this worked out.

I started out my walk with Christ having a hard time tithing.  I understood it, but that first year after a divorce and losing a high paying job, it felt even harder to do.  I gave a lot of things up in order to start over due to the financial burden I had put myself into over the years that worsened with loss of a job I really enjoyed.

The second year of my walk with Christ, I tried harder at giving even if my acquired job started off paying less than my unemployment.  Things seemed to stall through the year with no solution in sight.  So in January 2004 I decided to finally go for bankruptcy.  This was something I never wanted to do as I felt it was the cheating way out.  But let me tell you how God showed up at this time due to my whole hearted attempts at tithing correctly and praying for guidance out of the mess I had made for myself prior to knowing Him.

First, I learned even my 401Ks would be closed out to resolve the debt issue.  I had the bankruptcy plan in hand.

Second, I was forced to wait a week before the lawyer would even bother doing anything due to his current work load.  That did not bother me.  What is one week after nearly two years of squeaking by and having creditors even trying to subpoena you?

Third, within three business days my credit card company calls up.  “We’ll forgive half the debt if you pay half by February 2nd.”  I had two weeks to do this.  Maybe they got wind of my plan, but the lawyer said he would be unable to do anything for at least a week.  God obviously fixed this timing.

Fourth, in another day or two I received my 401K statement.  This had been hit during 2002 and earlier in 2003.  It really hadn’t looked good up through the third quarter of 2003, though I knew it had enough money to pay off a good portion of debt.  The economy did recuperate the end of that year, but my 401K went above and beyond what even I could expect in one quarter.  Another awesome thing I could thank God for.

So I closed my 401Ks, paid half of that huge credit card bill, and did not have to deal with bankruptcy.  I even had the ability to buy a newer used car to replace my eleven year old model I had at the time, which was becoming a money sink to keep on the road.  It was even cheaper to pay the car off and do a payment plan to the IRS for my taxes.  I can only thank God for how I came out ahead in this.

My finances are looking pretty good now.  I know beyond a doubt from my own tests with God they go really bad fast when I rob God of His tithe no matter how good I think my excuse is.  Besides, I know I’m working on treasure He wants me to have in heaven as I obey Him while on earth.  Cheating on God just winds up being me robbing myself and others of God’s blessings.  I hate cheaters and never want God to say I was one.  How about you?

  1. Let’s look at Malachi 3. First, who is God speaking to – the priests or the people?
We need to study the entire Book of Malachi rather than take a few verses out of context.

By the time we get to verse 6 in chapter 1, we see it is the priests that are being addressed at that point.

In both chapters 1 and 2 of Malachi there is a conversation going on between God and the priests. Every time the word "you" is used, it is referring to the priests. Chapter 3 continues with this conversation. In verse 5 God says "And I will come near to you to judgment….." In the Old Testament, during this period of time and generally speaking, only the priests could get near to God. It is only in the New Testament that born again believers, you and I, can get close to God. So up to chapter 3 verse 5, God is speaking to the priests. The word "you" is still referring to the priests. There is nothing in the scripture to indicate this changes when you get to verse 8. But that's not all.

Read Numbers 18:29-30 and then read Malachi 1:14. Those verses explain robbing God of the offerings. The PRIESTS, not the people, robbed God of the offering by giving to God the worst instead of the best.

In Nehemiah 13 we are told that the priests stole the Levites portion of the tithe; therefore, they had no food to eat at the temple, and they went back to their own fields.

Therefore, taking the Levites portion of the tithe is the robbing God of the tithe. Or to put it another way, THE LEVITES WERE ROBBED. God said He was robbed because the tithe was taken from the Levites.

Next, in Malachi 3:10 God says to bring all the tithes to the storehouse. The people took the tithes to the Levites who lived in the Levitical cities, not to the temple. The Levites took the required tithe of the tithe to the temple. (See Nehemiah 10:37-38) Only those tithes ever made it to the temple. The priests then took those tithes to the storehouse. It only makes sense if God is speaking to the priests in this verse.

Since in Numbers 18 God makes it perfectly clear that the tithe belongs to Him, and He gave it to the Levites, anyone who takes God’s tithe to their local church must also be robbing God since the Levites are not the ones getting it.

I see no way around this. Either the tithe ended per Hebrews 7:18, OR those who take God’s tithe to their local church must be robbing God since God gave clear instructions where to take His tithe. There is nothing in God’s Word to show that God ever changed those instructions. Therefore, the only conclusion I can reach is that taking a tithe to your local church is NOT paying the tithe to God. It is giving it to man. Nowhere in God’s Word does He give permission for the Christian Church to receive His tithe.

If Malachi 3 is binding on Christians, IT MUST THEN BE A SIN AGAINST GOD to take God’s tithe to your local church. IT MUST THEN BE A SIN for any pastor to accept God’s tithe.

The fact is, NO ONE, absolutely NO ONE pays the Biblical tithe today.

    THE FIRST TITHE
Leviticus 27:30-33 defines this tithe as a tenth of crops and animals in herds and flocks.
Numbers 18 gives the ordinances, or instructions, for this tithe, and commands this tithe be taken to the Levites.
Purpose of this tithe: to support the Levitical Priesthood.

    SECOND TITHE
Deuteronomy 14:22-27: aka The Festival Tithe - a tenth of crops, plus add to that the firstborn animals, and take to the yearly feasts.
Purpose of this tithe: “that thou mayest learn to fear the LORD thy God always”

    THIRD TITHE
Deuteronomy 14:28-29: aka The Three-Year Tithe aka The Poor Tithe - a tenth of crops, kept at home, and invite the Levites, widows, orphans, stranger to eat.
Purpose of this tithe: to feed the poor.

Now, tell me. Which of the above three tithes commanded by God does anyone follow today?

  2. You are correct in your Mosaic Law and indeed in that a new covenant was made when Jesus became our High Priest who is perfect and will never die. 1 Peter 2:9 says, "But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. (NIV) Part of the covenant is that we are adopted into God's family as His children, but to also be priests with Jesus as the head. Also, as part of this new covenant we received the Holy Spirit which gives us the power to follow God's commands in ways we never could without that power.
Proverbs 3:9-10 says, "Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; 10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine. (NIV) This applies to everyone stating that if they honor God with what they own, He will bless them for doing so. This is what happened for me when I decided to take tithing seriously as a way to honor God. Too many things lined up right and helped bless me into a better future. I believe coincidences are God's fingerprints proving He is watching and cares about us.
Now if we are not honoring God with a tithe to the church, how is the church going to afford spreading the Gospel as commanded? How is the church to help the poor, the widow, the orphan without the tithe? Can a pastor truly do the work of the Lord full time without the tithe? What ministries can survive without the support of a tithe and offerings? The church is supposed to be doing all these things, but in this day and age, without money they cannot. The temple under Mosaic Law could not function without receiving what was the required cost to keep it functioning, nor can the Church or even the Jewish Synagogues do so today.
